With the inauguration of Donald Trump on the way, holders of bitcoin everywhere are rejoicing, as the soon to be president announces proposes to integrate crypto into the mainstream, and his plans for deregulation are music to the ears of enthusiasts everywhere. Specifically noteworthy is the nomination of Paul Atkins to the SEC, who is generally considered to be more friendly towards cryptocurrency than what we have seen over the last few years under Gary Gensler. The key decision to make, is whether to class crypto as a security or as a digital commodity. Depending on what happens here, this will then determine how it becomes regulated, which will provide greater certainty to institutional investors.

And as crypto becomes more mainstream, it is worth remembering that at the moment, of the US$ 120 TN in investments the SEC oversees, only US$ 3 TN is invested into Crypto. Hence with deregulation, more mainstream investment houses will expand their crypto holdings, especially as the value is forecast to increase over the coming 12 months. There are those who will cite the story of Dutch tulips when it comes to bitcoin. Equally, in the current global economy, especially as the financial system becomes fragmented due to the removal of Russia from the swift system, crypto is being seen as the optimal way to transfer capital across borders, without restriction. And due to that, there is a real applied value.

From an investment point of view, the challenge is knowing which crypto currencies are worth backing. Bitcoin is the market leader, but there are many others. Will we see a consolidation into a handful of winners, or will there continue to be a mass proliferation of ‘penny’ cryptos? Or both? Bitcoin ETFs are now becoming mainstream and Blackrock are leading the way here. Other Asset Managers are following as the rush becomes a stampede. At a time when inflation is increasing, Bitcoin continues to be an effective hedge, and just as importantly, after each halving, the price normally soars by up to four times from before. On that basis, Bitcoin has a long way to go.

For people wanting to work in crypto, learning blockchain skills is essential, so encompassing cryptography, smart contracts, data structure, blockchain architecture, along with java, python and AI. In terms of the most popular programming languages and frameworks? These include:

Solidity: Blockchain programming language - broadly considered a must have skill
Ethereum: With the launch of Ethereum 2.0, probably the leading Blockchain platform for startups
Hyperledger: Opensource Blockchain that helps protect digital keys and sensitive data

Finally, smart contract development is a niche area within crypto, but one to watch as it not only is amongst the highest paying areas, but is likely to grow in demand. Smart contract development is the process of creating self-executing contracts on a blockchain network. These contracts are agreements that are coded directly onto a blockchain and automatically execute when certain conditions are met.

Looking ahead, the UK is also planning on deregulating its approach to crypto, where the current roadmap is set to be implemented by 2026, with the objective to create a comprehensive framework to cover all aspects at which point, we here at Rex Machina expect the UK to become one of the dominant arenas.
